Hi Richard The site is fantastic, I'd been randomly putting Bob in search engines for the last few years and not had much joy..... until now! You probably won't remember the gig at Rotherham Arts Centre, I was one of the two young lads who promoted / paid to bring you to the town. Convenience was the track which started it all for me and it was always a floor filler when I was djing all those years ago. Looking forward to hearing some of the demos and I'm now in the process of having a t-shirt printed with the logo on the front. How about a / some reunion gigs? It worked last year for Cud, Blue Aeroplanes are still on the go etc etc... Cheers for bringing back some fabulous memories. Jim
Cheers Jim and Mr. Krudster for your kind comments.
Reforming is, however, and speaking only for myself, not a question of money! Nor is it, for that matter, even an impossibility. In fact, it's a reality, because BOB did recently agree to reform to play at my brother Andy's 50th birthday party in 2011...(Simon, Dean and H kindly came and supported my new band who were up in London from the far west of Cornwall at the end of last year.) Maybe we should run a competition for a limited number of tickets to the do?! I suspect, however, that that may well be the full extent of our second coming. BOB were much-helped in the past by Andy...he certainly financed What A Performance and subsidised the early tours when necessary, as well as helping in a thousand practical ways. His persuasive wife, Nikki, managed to procure our agreement to reform for him on the night.
Glad you're liking the site...it has a way to go and I'll be on it again soon. I'm hoping Simon will write the history page, but I'll have to ask him first...
I'm also going to create a gig history page, for the sake of the eventual completeness of the archive. I've got some lists of tour dates that I can put up, and hope that you lot out there can fill in the gaps in due course.
Good to see the site at last - and more unreleased demos. This is excellent!
It would be a real shame if you got back together to learn up a set and only did the one gig. You lot could easily headline something like the Indietracks festival in 2011 I'm sure..
Funnily enough, I just got an email from an old BOB chum, Christian Fallon. He did our live sound for a few years around 1990-92. Really good to hear from him.
2011, eh? - Getting excited already - went and bought a new guitar lead this afternoon, and I've been checking out new amps ... light ones. Played along to the album as well - plenty of homework to do, but I actually enjoyed hearing it, which hasn't happened since we recorded it...
OK. If it's cool with you guys, I'd like to use this Gigs thread for people to leave dates/sets/brief memories of particular BOB gigs. I can use it as the basis for the website 'gig history' page. Let me know where you saw us and when. Did you nick a set list? Do you still have it? Did you tape it? Do you still have the tape? Did you get dumped by your girl on the night, but find solace in the words of Convenience and the taste of beer? It'd be great to hear from you.
Oh, and Ally very kindly sent me a bootleg recording of BOB live at The Princess Charlotte in Leicester, 11 April 1989. (The date appears on the Convenience poster.)
You can roll back the veil of time and listen to it on the Live Recordings Page now :)
Saw Richard and Simon at the Harlesden Mean Fiddler around 1990 with Twa Toots supporting. It was a covers set - "Rain", "She Moved Through The Fair" etc.
the simon doing covers night at portlands was a particular marvel although i can't hear heart of gold anymore without adding 'i've been to ilford, i've been to romford'. x
The Leicester Charlotte gig was ripped from hand held cassette by my goodself. I shared it on Soulseek a few years back and it seems to have made it's way around as intended. Still the only full BOB gig i've come across though.
That Charlotte gig was brilliant though - we travelled over from Derby and my mate John ended up a bit tipsy (the one shouting "Esmerelda" between songs..)
Oh and I just noticed that you have two tracks missing from the Leicester gig in the player (Trousercide and Scarecrow) The full setlist was: 1. Trousercide 2. Scarecrow 3. Tour Song 4. I Don't Know 5. Brian Wilson's Bed 6. Bloodline 7. What A Performance / For What It's Worth (Buffalo Springfield) 8. Convenience 9. Just Like You 10. Esmerelda Brooklyn (played as a request and replaced "Many Strings" on the written setlist) 11. It Was Kevin 12. Kirsty 13. So Far So Good
Do you have the missing songs, old chap?! Thanks for taping the thing in the first place..it was good to hear after all these years! I've just listened to Live in Munich from 1991 and Live in Lucerne from 1992. Both pretty good...and complete...will put up soon. There are several others...Simon's got some too :)
Still a very strong BOB contingent here in Shrewsbury. Our beloved venue The Fridge was graced by yourselves on many occasions. Talk of a reunion has stirred us up I can tell you !!
My favourite gig memory was Oswestry I think ... you played some sort of college graduation type party. You'd very kindly put us on the guest list so we had about 12-15 of us indie looking folks surrounded by ballgowns & tuxedos - very surreal !!
I do have a question though. There's a story we tell which I'm sure is true but it'd be nice to have it clarified.... We went to see you play a venue in Stoke & we think the support band was Radiohead ! True ?
True, yes. We were also supported by Blur in Cambridge. I guess if we'd hung on a bit longer, we'd have been part of that whole Brit Pop thing, but we stopped just before it kicked in.
We were courted for a while by an A&R guy from EMI called Dave Ambrose. He was trying to decide whether to sign us or this other band called Radiohead...
...and he made the right decision, frankly ;)
Glad to hear we're still fondly remembered in Shrewsbury. We had fun in The Fridge. There's at least one live recording of us playing there, and also a video, methinks. Will enquire...
Hi all, I was at the Stoke Wheatsheaf on that famous night. After politely clapping Radiohead I yawned "Well they were okay, but you'll never hear of them again..." I saw Bob live 8 or 9 times; Swagsack was my first purchase after hearing Kirsty on John Peel. My overriding memory of the band is you often standing out front watching the support acts - always impressed me, that! Cheers. Gareth.
I first saw Bob at the Piece Hall in Halifax in 1990 (if my memory serves me correctly). I originally went to see Pulp who were playing on the same bill (aswell as Blammo - what happened to them?) but Bob were much better. I knew from the moment that the band started to play 'convenience' and do their guitar jumps that this was gonna be my new favourite band and you still are, even to this day. Bob's music always cheers me up and one of my favourite gigs will always be that eventful night in Halifax in 1990. If anyone has a copy of this gig please put it up, I would be ever so.
It seems that Bob have a special place in many of our hearts! I was a student in Birmingham when I heard Swag Sack and then proceeded to catch most of their gigs in the Birmingham area for the next couple of years.
No idea of dates, but I reckon I saw them at the following venues: - Some hall in the Aston area (’90 Stride Up) - Hare & Hounds, Kings Heath - Birmingham Students Guild (PMSA bar to be exact) - Cannock (’91 - more below) - Edwards No.8 (’91 Straight Life tour)
I fondly remember the Cannock gig because it was in the middle of nowhere. My mate & I saw the gig listed in NME and jumped straight on a train to Cannock. Finally found the venue (some sort of working men’s club with a hall attached?), but we were so early the band hadn’t arrived. It was a brilliant gig and I remember asking Richard if anyone could give us a lift back to Brum (the trains had already finished at some stupid time). In the end we got a lift off, I think, Dean’s girlfriend (?) – with about 4 of us piled into the back of a dodgy old car (the police even stopped us for lack of lights!).
And being sad that I am, I even printed my own Bob T-Shirt with the girl logo – which earned me a song dedication at the Edwards No8 gig.
Ive started adding dates to the Gig History page...and there's an appeal for help there, too. Check it out: http://www.houseofteeth.co.uk/gighistory.htm
You can also link to it from the music and the live recordings pages (and the botom links on every page).
It'll take some time to get it right...especially the early years, but I've got various dated tapes and videos from early gigs, so I should be able to pin some down soon.
Bolton Institute of Higher Education, a Wednesday night sometime in January/February (at a guess -it was a dark night, at any rate) 1990. I seem to recall 'I Don't Know' had been released, and maybe it was the tour for 'Stride Up' a single which managed to make it into Bolton's 'Our Price', saving me (John) the usual trip to Manchester to buy it. Turned up ridiculously early, and had to leave before the end because the last bus did not take into account rare gigs at the BIHE. Shared a slice of Pizza with Jem, and got t-shirt signed - now faded :-( We will trawl through our stuff and see what other dates we can find. The Mean Fiddler rings a definite bell with Jo too...
Nice one John! All these bits of info are great, and I will try and use them to good effect in the not too distant.
I've also been thinking about BOB playing live again, after an interesting conversation with our man Dean 'The Machine' Legget, with whom I hooked-up recently at a recording studio in Cornwall on a BOB-related project. Hadn't seen him for 6 months or so, so good to find him in fine fettle. He led me to believe that BOB might be able do some quite nice gigs if we were so inclined.
It made me think that the band should have a chat. Maybe we could do something before 2011 after all? Will keep ya'll posted of any developments in that regard.
Bob Bob Bob. What a delight it is to nosey around your site. Been waiting 20 years to hear Scarecrow again!
I first saw you with a group of mates, Stratford Moat House I'm guessing from your gig list. We drove up from Cheltenham after someone heard you on John Peel and gave a glowing report. All of us were blown away that night. Especially remember Brian Wilson's Bed, Kirsty and So Far So Good. Fantastic. Also seem to remember Richard at a keyboard?
Next time live I think was at the Fleece & Firkin in Bristol. The keyboard was gone (think you said it broke) but great gig again. I remember two things from after: 1)trying to persuade you (without success) to part with your misprinted 'No Stopping' Bob badge - the printer got the red and blues mixed up. 2)Simon being knackered and sitting by the side of the stage with his head in his hands after the last encore. I felt awkward asking him to sign my Bob poster, but he did: "Have My Children!" he wrote.
There were at least three other gigs - Bristol Bierkeller, somewhere odd and hall-like in Birmingham and Jericho Tavern Oxford. I missed out on a lot by spending a year in France, but I did once see a write-up for Esmerelda Brooklyn in "Les Inrockuptibles" (think cross between Q & NME in French)that compared your writing skills to Lennon & Macartney. Just thought you might like to know, if you didn't already.
Anyway, I've waffled far too long. Thanks for the site, thanks for the great memories, and here's to a reunion gig in the near future. If you could give me some notice that would be good - I live in New Zealand now, but I reckon I could wangle it. And bring along at least 15-20 mates who still live in the UK. One of them would be a chap called Rod who I believe put you up in Stoke one night after a gig(?). Think he might even have got that prized badge off you in return....
Just dug out of the loft an old 'Tired' newsletter. Scan is on its way, Richard, but here are the dates (all 1991, it would seem, if it was to support 'Tired': Oct 4 Oxford Polytechnic 5 Northampton Irish Centre 6 Bath College 11 Plymouth Polytecnic 12 Polytechnic of Wales 13 Southampton Eastpoint Centre 17 Wigan Maxine's 18 Glasgow King Tut's 19 Leeds University 20 Hartlepool Borough Hall 21 Huddersfield Polytechnic 24 Exeter University 25 Bristol Bierkeller 26 London Queen Mary's College Nov 2 Blackpool Jenks 3 Liverpool Planet X 5 Leicester Polytechnic 6 Nottingham Venus Club 7 Stoke on Trent Freetime Club 8 Manchester Boardwalk 10 Harlow Square 11 Oxford Jericho Tavern 15 Tamworth rat Hole 17 London New Cross Venue 20 Birmingham Burberries 22 German Dates (how many dates on one day, hey?) Dec 6 Shrewsbury The Fridge 7 Worksop Regal Arts Centre 8 Hull New Adelphi More dates were to be announced.
Hiya, Bibster & the Myspace folks - Good to have some action round here after a while; I've been having a lovely summer so far (cricket notwithstanding), hope y'all have too...
- I remember that night in Bristol - a couple of times that happened, all the jumping up and down got too much, and having a bit of a collapse seemed like the only option. Those tours were quite hard work...
Which does remind me - we never had any accommodation lined up for any gigs in this country -it was always a question of crashing on somebody's floor (or settee if you were quick out of the van), so a good night's sleep could be hard to come by. It's no wonder we were jiggered sometimes.
But if we did ever take over your house, flat, parents house, room or pub all those years ago, a big BOB THANKYOU is probably long overdue... Couldn't have done it without you. Leave a post on here if you're still talking to us - it would be a treat to hear from you again.
Some of those '91 dates were with the mighty Carter, I'm pretty sure. Others we headlined with a great outfit called Langfield Crane. Another day we'll natter about all the other top acts we had on with us - I've certainly got a little mental list of favourites ...
What a wonderful thing to have come across this website. You guys were the band that I lived by during my late teens. So many memories of great gigs in both Leeds and Huddersfield. I remember Simon telling me the story of the Shipping Forecast on Skylark II at one of them and I think that was also the gig when I shouted out the fact that BOB were placed higher in the Indie Charts than the magnificent Family Cat. A fact that Simon found a highly amusing interlude between the songs. That one was definitely a Leeds Duchess of York gig.
Certainly just discovering the site has made me dig out my old taped recordings of Swagsack and Leave the Straight Life Behind out. God aren't cassettes shit? But hey its allowed me to take in the majesty once again.
So thanks for the wonderful memories. I look forward to digging into the delights that the site holds.
Anyone remember the Rotherham gig in the early 90's?...shame to admit it but I was one of those fresh faced young lads who got up on the stage to sing convenience & what a performance...brill that you even let us get up there to do the vocals!
Saw you at least 4 times 'up north' and always had a chat with Simon et al afterwards...best times of our lives.....bloody great that you're back!
I was at the gig at Newcastle in 1989 which was in a pub called the Broken Doll. It's been demolished now. Memories are a little sketchy but I think The Siddeleys may have been the support that night and possibly a local band called The Nivens. Saw a few other bands there too like the Brilliant Corners and The Driscolls.
Got to echo what Steve says about the best times of our lives etc. I'm a 44 year old adult, but I still wish that someone would hurry up and invent an affordable time-machine. Seriously!
Great to find the website. Another of the Shrewsbury contingent here and i'm sure there are many others on the way. Would be great to see you guys once again.
On another note I was at the Wheatsheaf (Ithink) in Stoke the night that Radiohead supported. Remember thinking their drummer was good.
Not strictly supported - we tossed a coin. I thought they had nice guitars too...
Hello,Jukka & Shrewsbury and a very happy late new year everyone else, too. Hope you're all fine... We always had a good time in Shrewsbury. That's where we were when the Berlin wall came down, although I'm fairly sure we were more interested in getting to the cafe... Anyone seen Neville? Oh, and who were the PA company there? They always seemed to do Birmingham gigs too - nice blokes with decent monitors; all too rare, I'm afraid. S. xx
Hi Simon. Tis I - Neville Street. I'm still here in Shrewsbury, running a press and PR agency called Stella Six. Was chatting with Chris Allen, who used to come to all of the Bob gigs and we were saying that'd it be great to get you guys up to do a gig. The Hardy Boys, a band from Scotland who released an EP on my record label Stella Five 20 years ago, are also getting back together. They and another local band could provide support. What say yee? BTW Convenience sounds as fresh as it did when it first came out. Hope all's well with you ;-) Neville
Hi Neville - Justin here. You mentioning the Hardy Boys had me digging through piles of Vinyl and finally finding my copy of Wonderful Lie - 20 years !!??!! frightening! Would be a great gig though.
I know mate it is isn't it? It's like when I was 16 listening to old Beatles, Stones and Doors records from the 60s. Yep certainly would be a good gig....
Like Bozza my memories are of you playing The Fridge in Shrewsbury, and possibly once supporting The Family Cat in Kiddeminster, the years haven’t been too good to my memory. You were extremely popular in Shrewsbury though and most weekends I would find myself dancing to Convenience.
I saw the popguns possibly around the time of Esmerelda Brooklyn and I think Bob supported them or vice versa. The thing with the fridge due to cheap red stripe, it could have been anyone.
Had my bob logo t-shirt up until about 10 years ago and then also like my family cat t-shirts they became solely for using when my wife dyed her hair. I may still have a setlist from a fridge gig and possibly in some box somewhere a badge.
