Thought I'd start this new topic in the hope of some help (from Richard and Simon) in the form of guitar tabs so people like me can play along to BOB songs with confidence!

One that has been bugging me for years - and I still haven't mastered it (although I have worked out some parts of the song almost note perfect) is the opening chord sequence to 'Leave The Straight Life Behind' - it sounds straightforward enough, but I can't get it at all!

Also Convenience - a nice simple sounding opening sequence and I think I've got it, but a bit of help would be very much appreciated = I play (all with upward stroke) A (5th fret), D (10th fret), F# (14th fret) and then E (12th fret) which sounds almost bang on. I then play A (5th fret), D (10th fret), B (7th fret) and back to A (5th fret) - however I don't think this second part is quite right because the B and A don't sound quite right.

    That'll do for starters!

Let's not get too into this tonight, but for Convenience bung a capo on your 2nd fret and have another go... In G... First chord is D shape at 9th fret.

If anyone could let us know how to do chord diagrams on here this sort of thing would be a lot more possible... There must be a way in this day & age. Kevin's easy but a sod to explain without pictures.

In general , if you're trying to work out one of ours and it's not sounding right, capo on 2nd or 4th. Works for The Smiths too.

    Cheers Simon ;-)

I've tried Convenience with the capo, but it still don't sound right so I'm obviously doing something wrong...

As for getting pictures in, this forum doesn't allow HTML entry which makes things a bit tricky.

The best I could come up was something along these lines:

My take on Convenience (* denotes the chords that don't sound right).

    A D F# E A D B* A*
    E |---9---10---14---12----9---10---7---5---
    B |--10---10---14---12---10---10---7---5---
    G |---9---11---15---13----9---11---8---6---
    D |-------12---16---14--------12---9---7---
    A |----------------------------------------
    E |----------------------------------------

I looks good in the editor due to the fixed-width font, but once it's rendered on the site it doesn't quite work due to the proportionally spaced font. :-/

    Cheers

You've got more patience than me, Tony. I've been looking for a programme that'll let me put the dots onto a blank chord diagram, and then cut & paste into the comments field, nearly had it tonight but couldn't make it go. Will ask around at work after half term...( I'm not a teacher, just took the week off).

So let's do this the old fashioned way for the mo.

Your 3rd chord up there should just be top 3 strings all at 14th fret, let the d string( sounding an E) ring if you hit it, but leave it open all the way through the intro. It would be DMaj7 if there was no capo,no idea what it really is.

The second to last chord is 5th fret top string, then 7th fret 2nd string and 6th fret on the g string. Sort of F#min, but with that E root.

The last chord is just D shape ( like the first chord ) but at the 4th fret .

Which should bring you to the end of the intro. Plain sailing after that.

The intro to ...Straight Life / Kevin is - AMaj in the 1st position (2nd, 3rd & 4th string, 2nd fret, duh),then A7sus4 (ie lose the middle finger, up one fret to D on the 2nd; then slide THAT shape up 2 frets, letting all the open strings in the area ring out...We really do need pictures for this, but hope that helps.

    All The Best, Mate, S.

    Simon

    Thanks again!

Okay I'm getting a bit further but I definitely think pictures will tell the story - for both!

A bit of patience required on my part - I've waited all these years getting nowhere, a while longer isn't going to hurt!

    Cheers

I like guitar corner! OK, so actually none of you are quite right...not even Simon, even though he played it on the record! The penultimate chord in each of the two sequences of eight chords that make up the intro is different in each. I have a plan to make tabs viable in this forum, as I also have plans to improve the forum generally...it keeps crashing temporarily. More of all that later. The Convenience video is now on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXLE_0aruec

Maybe that'll help with deciphering the intro ;)

Glad you like guitar corner Richard!

I put Simon's chords to the test last night and it definitely sounded pretty right - it out my attempt to shame! It'll be interesting to get your take on it.

Great news that you are looking to improve the forum generally because I too have spotted this one is rather flaky and a bit limiting.

    Look forward to the upgrade!

    Cheers

I've not forgotten the guitar tabs section, and I have some downloadable stuff to put up soon. Will get back to you ;)
